Joe Mama (a.k.a. Joseph Rickard) has been entertaining
Florida Keys audiences for most of his recent career, which stretches over
50 years span. He has regular following of “groupies” – tourists,
weekenders, snowbirds, bikers and of course locals – who flock to his
long-running Thursday night gig at the Dockside on Boot Key Harbor
and at Burdines on Friday nights, just across the harbor. Joe Mama, who hails from
a small town in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, gives his
fans the kind of music they expect in a tropical settings: Fun, “folky”, “old times”, bluesy number – some classical and some of his own, with a
little reggae, rock, swing, country and Buffett thrown in. This talented
musician (his tip jar jokingly pleads “Please, send this guy to music
school”) plays the guitar, banjo and fiddle. Since a short lived contract

he has produced a collection of CDs that visitors, buy to
take home some memories of their Keys vacation. In Joe’s colorful
career he has been most influenced by musicians like; Levon Helm, Tom Paxton,
Tommy Jerrel, Fred Neil, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Pete and Mike Seeger, Woody
and Arlo Guthrie, Hank Williams Sr., Doc Watson and Leon Redbone - and he
has played with many of them at legendary joints like the Cellar Door, El Mucombo, Edgertons, Mariposa, Café Lena, Village Gate, Palisades Park, and
Café Wa. |
